Foreword
Although the department is as old as the college, it started teaching Honors Course since 1996. Two full time teachers and a number of Part time ones (changing from time to time) are engaged in teaching not only the Honors Course but also the General (Combination) and compulsory Course (for B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. Stream) offered by the Burdwan University. All of them are competent enough and they devote the best of them to finish the syllabus every year by not compromising with the quality of teaching.
Students Enrolment and Strength
Students are admitted to the department as per the university guidelines. Last year, the number of seats in the first year Honors course was as follows:-
General |
S.C |
S.T |
Physically challenged and others |
Total |
42 |
13 |
04 |
01 |
60 |
This may change in the next year. Dropouts are there but the number is not remarkable.
Academic Activities
Teaching-learning is not just confined to regular class-room teaching based on CHALK-AND-TALK method. Students are encouraged to learn on their own and express themselves freely by making them engaged in such activities as Group Discussion, quiz, Subject-based seminar by the students themselves. A positive response in this respect has been found in the last few years. Sometimes, seminars by external speakers are arranged in order to widen the frontier of knowledge of the students in difficult issues connected with the syllabus. The department has a separate library of its own known as ‘Seminar Library. It is equipped with as many as 351 books. Students have free access to it, and they can borrow books from here as well as from the ‘General Library’ to fill up the communication gaps, if any, in the class room.
Extracurricular Activities
Apart from the curricular activities, students are also motivated to take part in extra-curricular activities. They publish a wall magazine christened “FLINT” regularly in which students of different years get the opportunity of expressing their original thoughts and feelings in terms of creative writing. They participate in sports and games as well as in the cultural competitions/programs; their involvement in NCC and NSS programs is also remarkable. It is also notable that every year they organize a colorful teacher’s day program to pay homage to that great educationist – cum – philosopher Dr. S. Radhakrishnan as well as the departmental teachers.
Examination and Results
All examinations (class tests, tests) are conducted in time; results of the college examination are published regularly. Teachers, however, do not finish their duty just by assessing the answer script, to the students in order to draw their attention to the mistakes done by them, and provide useful suggestion as to how improve in the next examinations, particularly the ones conducted by Burdwan University. As a result of the joint effort of teachers and students, the results of the University examinations at the Honors level have all along been satisfactory. The results of the General Examinations, however, are not up to the mark. This may, in part, be ascribed to the irregularity of the students in class attendance.
Excursion
The department has a plan to organize an educational excursion in the next year at least in collaboration with some other department.
Unique Feature
Whatever may be the success or failures of the department, it must be proud of one thing, and that is, its student-teacher rapport, which must play a significant role in the gradual departmental development in years to come. |
