Brief history
Netaji Mahavidyalaya started its functioning in the year 1948. The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments of this college which started its journey right from the year 1948, the year of establishment of this college.
The department introduced Honors course in Physics in the year 1999 with 7 seats for the students. The number of seats for the same has been increased to twenty-five since 2009. Total number of sanctioned posts of the teachers of the department is four (including 1 for Electronics). At present there are two full time teachers (Dr. Binay Malakar (M.Sc. in physics from C.U. and Ph.D. from the Indian association for the cultivation of science), Anupam Das (M.Sc. in Physics, IIT Kharagpur)), two part-time teachers (Mrinal Kanti Ghosh (M.Sc. in Physics), Shubhankar Ghosh (M.Sc. in Physics)) and three guest lecturers (Dr. Abani Mohan Rudra (M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics from B.U.), Malay Kundu (M.Sc. in Physics), Minakshi Ghosh (M.Sc. in Physics)) attached to the department.
In recent times, on and average 6 to 7 students of each year secure more than 60% marks (that is First Class) in the university examinations. In the current academic session, 13 students of Part II Honors and 6 students of Part I Honors have obtained more than 60% marks in their respective university examinations.
The department carries out different types of academic activities. Recently, the department along with the department of chemistry of the college has organized an educational excursion at Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research at Dhanbad, Jharkhand, which is one of the prestigious CSIR institutes in India. In this educational tour, 63 students of the two department participated.
The department issues a wall magazine every six months in which students of different years write small popular articles on recent topics in physics.
The department also organizes seminars on different recent topics in Physics in which eminent speakers from different college and universities deliver their lectures. The purpose of organizing this seminar is not enhance our knowledge and to make the students aware of what new development has been taking place in this subject.
The department has its own well-equipped laboratories, a library containing about 300 books, and two computers. For the last two years, the department has been conducting Part I Physics Honors practical examinations of the Burdwan University. This year the University of Burdwan has chosen this department as one of the centers for Part III Physics Honors Practical Examination.
About 60 students so far have completed their Honors Degree course in Physics from this department. Some of the successful students have gone for higher studies and some have joined teaching profession or IT sectors. |
