Laboratories

All the laboratory-based departments like Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Geography, Plant Protection Environmental Science have well-equipped laboratories, though infrastructure requires to be developed further. Computer facilities are also available for the students and the college is in the process of expanding these facilities. Internet, Fax, Intercom, Telephone booth and Photocopying facilities are also available in the college. Offices, Library and Departments are to be interconnected by computer network to facilitate inter-disciplinary activities and understanding.

The college is enriched with a scholarly faculty. A set of highly motivated and expert teachers are involved in Teaching and Evaluation process, some of whom are involved in active research under projects by UGC and other agencies.

The college has satisfactory success rate and many students who graduate from this college go to many universities for further study at Master's & B.Ed. levels.

Apart from teaching in class rooms, teachers also take initiatives for counselling the students in leisure hours. Easy access to teachers help the students to sort out academic problems faced by them.

REMEDIAL COACHING CENTRE FOR SC, ST, MINORITY and OBC STUDENTS :

A coaching centre for economically backward students of SC, ST, OBC and Minority categories has been set up in the year 2005-06 in the college campus under the sponsorship of the UGC, New Delhi. The Centre is expected to provide academic facilities for students of Backward and Minority classes to enable them to succeed in university examinations. The feedback of the said coaching is satisfactory. The performance of the students in General is rather good. In addition a number of students of different subjects were placed in first class in the last university examinations.

COACHING CENTRE FOR ‘ENTRY IN SERVICES’ FOR SC, ST, MINORITY & OBC STUDENTS :

The college also conducts UGC-sponsored coaching classes for Entry in services for SC/ST/ Minority/OBC students. The scheme was launched in the academic year 2008-2009.

The said category of students are entitled to this coaching free of cost. The general category of students can also avail of this opportunity on a minimum charge.

The courses offered in the last year were SSC (teacher) in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Geography and Biological Sciences and PSC (clerkship). As many as 230 students got benefited from the first course and 155 students from the second one. 19 veteran teachers from this college and other colleges/schools were engaged in offering these courses.

Two counsellors having required expertise were entrusted with the job of offering coaching in GI (General Intelligence) / GK / Arithmetic for both the courses.

In the ensuing session (2009-10), some new courses like PSC (Miscellaneous), Banking, SSC (officers and clerks) are going to be launched.

Noticeable, whereas in the last session it was the privilege of the students having qualified from this college, from the coming session, students of other colleges can also apply for this.

To qualify oneself as a ‘sent up’ candidate for the Final Examination (Part I, II & III ), a candidate has to sit for the following college examinations- i) Class Tests and ii) Test Examination.

SKY WATCHING CENTRE :

 

With a view to promoting interest in sky-watching among the students, teachers, non-teaching staff and other persons of the locality, the college has set up a giant and up-to-date telescope on its own premises. Eventually, sky-watching camps are organized by the college from time to time.

POST OFFICE :

The college has arranged for a post office named ‘Netaji Mahavidyalaya Post Office” on its premises. This post office is at the service of the inmates of the college and its neighbours as well. This is a unique facility and a matter of prestige as well.

NCC and NSS

The students can also enroll themselves in the NCC and /or NSS units of this college. There are one NCC company and as many as six units of the NSS in the college. The NCC imparts military discipline among the interested students where the NSS units are constantly at the service of the service of the college as well as the surrounding locality.

Seminars

 

One thing that requires special mention in this regard is that each department of the college organises departmental seminars, once or twice a year, the speakers of which are chosen from among the students of the respective department.

 

  • In September, 2004, a State Level seminar on ‘Human Rights and Human Development in India’ was held in the college with the financial assistance of the UGC.

  • In January, 2007 the college organized a National level seminar on ‘‘New Vistas of Energy Search : Problems and Prospects.”

  • Another national seminar (‘‘on challanges of the indigenous cultures in the face of Globalisation’’) was organised by the college from 8-9 April, 2008.

  • Other seminars on different aspects are also being held at regular intervals involving students and teachers of the College.

  • The college is going to organise another National Seminar on ‘Industrial Resurgence in India’ sometime in September 2010.

  • Post-seminar publication is a special feature of the seminars organised by the college. It consists of the research papers & articles presented/ contributed by the speakers/delegates attending the seminars.

Computer Center

The Computer Centre of the college offers the facility of computer operation throughout the day. Arrangement is also there for the practice of the general students in leisure hours. Needless to say that it can contribute a lot to the new Internet Millenium. The Centre offers different courses to the students of home and outside under the supervision of the college

Hostel Facilities

The college having a wide hinterland has good hostel facilities for both male and female students. The Boy’s hostel (Bidyarthi Bhawan) has a capacity of sixty boarders. The three-storeyed Girls’ hostel (Nazrul Chatriniwas) has a capacity of 120 boarders. Students are admitted to the hostels on the basis of distance of their residence from the hostels and their respective merit.

There are specific rules and regulations of both the hostels (to be put up in the respective notice boards) violation of which may lead to severe punishment, even cancellation of boardership.

The expenditure for staying in the hostel is as follows.

a) Admission fee : Rs. 300/-

b) Monthly Seat Rent : Rs. 150/-

c) Food charge (on the basis of actual expenditure of the mess)

 

Seat rent for one year is to be deposited in advance at the time of admission to the hostels.

Games and Sports

 

 

The college has its own play-ground which is used as centre of Games & Sports of the college as well as of the locality. Facilities for outdoor games like Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Athletics, Badminton etc. are available. Indoor games like Table Tennis, Carrom, Chess etc. are also provided for boys & girls.

Apart from the inter-college & inter-department football championship tournaments, the college Football team also takes part in the ‘Eliot Shield Tournament’, Kolkata.

 

 

There is also a Multi Gymnasium in the college where there is provision for exercise for male & female students separately.

The Annual sports meet is held during winter in every session. Most of the facilities of Indoor Games are available at the students’ common room.

Coaching camps are regularly held for Football, Cricket and Athletics. Very recently the college has achieved outstanding performance in sports particularly in Athletics.

One female athlet has been the champion in ‘Non Govt. College State Athletics Meet – 2009’.
